Hey ... This thread just occured to me. As a place for obscure lyrics ... poetry whatever. Really ... it's so I don't have to keep lttering up my posts to other topics with favorite lines. I'm off to copy and paste a few personal favorites. This IS a good idea no? T

Alright ... I'll kick it off with my favorite poem. Mainly 'cause the cut & paste was a no brainer ...
Listen with the night falling we are saying thank you we are stopping on the bridge to bow from the railings we are running out of the glass rooms with our mouths full of food to look at the sky and say thank you we are standing by the water looking out in different directions back from a series of hospitals back from a mugging after funerals we are saying thank you after the news of the dead whether or not we knew them we are saying thank you in a culture up to its chin in shame living in the stench it has chosen we are saying thank you over telephones we are saying thank you in doorways and in the backs of cars and in elevators remembering wars and the police at the back door and the beatings on stairs we are saying thank you in the banks that use us we are saying thank you with the crooks in office with the rich and fashionable unchanged we go on saying thank you thank you with the animals dying around us our lost feelings we are saying thank you with the forests falling faster than the minutes of our lives we are saying thank you with the words going out like cells of a brainwith the cities growing over us like the earth we are saying thank you faster and faster with nobody listening we are saying thank you we are saying thank you and waving dark though it is W.S. Best Of All Possible Worlds
I was runnin' through that summer rain tryin' to catch that evening train tryin' to kill that Ol' familiar pain weavin' through my tangled brain but when I tipped my bottle back I smacked into a cop I didn't see
That policeman said Mr. cool if you ain't drunk then you're a fool I said if that's against the law tell me why I never saw A man locked in that jail of yours who wasn't just as lowdown poor as me well that was when someone turned out the lights and I wound up in jail to spend the night And dream of all the wine and lonely girls in this best of all possible worlds
well I woke up next morning feelin' like my head was gone And like my thick Ol' tounge was lickin' somethin' sick and wrong And I told that man I'l sell my soul for somethin' wet and cold as that ol' cell Well that kindly jailer grinned at me all eaten up with sympathy and poured himself another beer & came & whispered in my ear if booze was just a dime a bottle boy you couldn't even buy the smell
I said I knew there was somethin' I liked about this town but it takes more than that to bring me down down down cause there's still alot of wine & lonely girls In this best of all possible worlds
Well they finally came & told me they was gonna set me free and I'ld be leavin' town if I knew what was good for me I said It's nice to learn that everybody's so concerned about my health I said I won't be leavin' no more quicker than I can cause I believe I've enjoyed 'bout all of this that I can stand And I don't need this town of yours more than I never needed nothin' else
cause there's still alot of drinks that I ain't drunk and lots of pretty thoughts that I ain't thunk Lord there's still so many lonely girls in this best of all possible worlds

Gonna need some time to think about this one, but this thread has some real potential Bob Dylan is always thought to be a tremendous lyricist, but Lowell George's wit was pretty hard to beat in the 1970s. Rocket In My Pocket and Framed are 2 hilariously funny songs that come to mind. Barrere's humor can be exceptional as well. And there are so many thought provoking songs by so many talented lyricists out there... well, as I said, I'm gonna need to ponder awhile. - chadgumbo

These lyrics have always tugged at my heartstrings:
Oh pirates, yes they rob us Sold I to the merchant ships minutes after they took I from the bottomless pit
But my hand was made strong by the hand of the almighty he fought in this generation triumphantly won't you help to sing, these songs of freedom, 'cos all i ever had was redemption songs,
emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds. Have no fear for atomic energy, 'cos none of them can stop the time
How long will they kill our prophets while we stand around and look? some say it's just a part of it we got's to fulfill the book
But my hand was made strong by the hand of the almighty he fought in this generation triumphantly won't you help to sing, these songs of freedom, 'cos all i ever had was redemption songs,

"40,000" by Charles Bukowski
at the track today, Father's Day, each paid admission was entitled to a wallet and each contained a little surprise.
most of the men seemed between 30 and 55, going to fat, many of them in walking shorts, they had gone stale in life, flattened out....
in fact, damn it, they aren't even worth writing about! why am I doing this?
these don't even deserve a death bed, these little walking whales, only there are so many of them, in the urinals, in the food lines, they have managed to survive
in a most limited sense but when you see so many of them like that, there and not there, breathing, farting, commenting, waiting for a thunder that will not arrive, waiting for the charging white horse of Glory, waiting for the lovely female that is not there, waiting to WIN, waiting for the great dream to engulf them but they do nothing, they clomp in their sandals, gnaw at hot dogs dog style, gulping at the meat, they complain about losing, blame the jocks, drink green beer, the parking lot is jammed with their unpaid for cars, the jocks mount again for another race, the men press toward the betting windows mesmerized, fathers and non-fathers Monday is waiting for them, this is the last big lark.
and the horses are totally beautiful. it is shocking how beautiful they are at that time, at that place, their life shines through; miracles happen, even in hell.
I decide to stay for one more race.

Now we're cookin'! Just had this sent to me ... I'm not a religous man. But I sure am a prayin' fool! And without faith I'ld be an empty handed fool.
St. Theresa's Prayer:
May today there be peace within. May you trust your highest power that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.... May you be content knowing you are a child of God.... Let this presence settle into our bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of you.

Yohoho here's my best guess of what that white soul brother is saying ... I could be wrong!
Give it Time - Eric Lindell
Yes I know it's a drag it's doggone shame I danced the same dance felt the same pain I heard the same things and I done the same things as you You best believe me it's true I worn the same shoes I walked the same walk at least a time or two And I heard the same things done the same things as you
In this time, time that we live in it's easy to give in, but it won't do no good Give it time, things will get better A change in the weather it just might pull you through
Ya Best believe me it's true It ain't just a line I lost some good things I had some hard times I read the same signs and ran the same lines as you These holes in the soles of these worn out shoes Walked a million miles I sang some blues I don't need no other blues I done paid my dues just like you
In this time, time that we live in it's easy to give in, but it won't do no good Give it time, things will get better A change in the weather it just might do you good
You best believe me it's true I worn the same shoes I walked the same walk at least a time or two And I heard the same things and I done the same things as you Yes I know it's a drag it's a doggone shame I walked the same walk felt the same pain I heard the same things and I done the same things as you
In this time, time that we live in it's easy to give in, but it won't do no good Give it time, things will get better A change in the weather it just might do you good

Shower The People - James Taylor
You can play the game you can act out the part Though you know it wasn’t written for you Tell me how do you stand there with your broken heart ashamed of playing the fool? One thing can lead to another it doesn’t take any sacrifice Father and mother sister and brother If it feels nice don’t think twice
Shower the people you love with love Show them the way that you feel Things are gonna work out fine if you only will Shower the people you love with love Show them the way that you feel Things are gonna be much better if we only will
You can run but you cannot hide This is widely known What you going to do with your foolish pride when you’re standing there alone? When you tell somebody the way you feel you can feel it beginning to please I think it's true what they say about the squeaky wheel always getting the grease
Shower the people you love with love Show them the way that you feel Things are gonna work out fine if you only will Shower the people you love Show them the way that you feel Things are gonna be much better if we only will

Tipi,
I like lyricist who can capture a "life moment" in a single line, Lowell was great at this "She got no corners She can turn on a dime"
or "Her toes were so pretty And her lies so sweet"
one more "I been down here so long Dreamin' up songs"
Peter Gabriel is also one of the best "So I watched her wash her hair"
or "I was shown another me"
John Hiatt is the other that comes to mind "Got a guitar hangin' 'bout waist high"
or "Her love is like blood"
When a songwriter can transport you instantly in simple, concise language to a special, moving or important moment in your life that to me is the height of "artless" (in a good way) art.
By the way, how DID you get that HMFIC under your name? As you know I've been shooting my mouth off forever on this site and I only have one star, what do I have to do to get a promotion?
Great idea for a thread, you genius you. I'll come up with some more examples. I didn't give song credits on the above lines, I thought it would be more fun and might encourage you to listen to the great artist above if you had to find them yourself.
Peace j ashley

Sorry one more since it seems so appropriate now and I really want another star.
"Find the cost of freedom Buried in the ground Mother earth will cover you Lay your body down" CSN&Y Do that twice and that's the song. Simple concise and to the point, GREAT ART.

Heya Jashley ya write ...
I like lyricist who can capture a "life moment" in a single line, Lowell was great at this "She got no corners She can turn on a dime"
Yeah you right! AND I been feelin' bad this has remained a "Non LF related discussion! While Lowells 1 liners will get ya ... as all the above had me thinkin' it's when you addum all together they "really knock you out"
Richie once said to me "can't believe we're not doin' Down The Road! He really likes 'high steppin' sneakers'. But when I went to edit myself for accuracy ... I couldn't leave nothin' out ...
Down the road
I gave you high steppin’ sneakers But you still can’t move your feet And it’s cold in the morning So I turn away at the heat You say faster but I speed up But still I’m much too slow I feel your Innuendo
You got all the answers at least they say you do But when I start to strut my stuff You say “hey it ain’t time to go”<br>That ain’t what I been told Guess I better meet you down the road
You know sometimes I wanna steal away and stare Until my face it touch the ground My dinner in Chicago my breakfast down the line If you don’t hear from me girl hope you’re feelin’ fine ‘Cause I been doin’ time, hope you’re feelin’ fine
Call me up, catch a plane But don’t think of takin’ another game ‘Cause my rgular lady she get’s my pocket change
Do you want my every thought Well come over here and try to get me off Won’t you please
Shake your dignity Put a little on me On me, on me, on me
That shit'll make you crazy! Peace T ps I could tell ya what I did to get HMFIC by my name ... but then I'ld have to kill you
