Somebody at work today asked me who accompanied Robert Plant on vocals on The Battle of Evermore. The answer of course is Sandy Denny. But that got me to thinking about this thread and since I don't think we've posted any Zeppelin yet, here we go...
[glow=red,2,300]The Battle of Evermore[/glow]
Queen of Light took her bow, And then she turned to go, The Prince of Peace embraced the gloom, And walked the night alone.
Oh, dance in the dark of night, Sing to the morning light. The dark Lord rides in force tonight, And time will tell us all.
Oh, throw down your plow and hoe, Rest not to lock your homes.
Side by side we wait the might of the darkest of them all.
I hear the horses' thunder down in the valley blow, I'm waiting for the angels of Avalon, waiting for the eastern glow.
The apples of the valley hold, The seeds of happiness, The ground is rich from tender care, Repay, do not forget, no, no. Dance in the dark of night, sing to the morning light.
The apples turn to brown and black, The tyrant's face is red.
Oh the war is common cry, Pick up you swords and fly. The sky is filled with good and bad that mortals never know.
Oh, well, the night is long the beads of time pass slow, Tired eyes on the sunrise, waiting for the eastern glow.
The pain of war cannot exceed the woe of aftermath, The drums will shake the castle wall, the ring wraiths ride in black, Ride on.
Sing as you raise your bow, shoot straighter than before. No comfort has the fire at night that lights the face so cold.
Oh dance in the dark of night, Sing to the morning light. The magic runes are writ in gold to bring the balance back. Bring it back.
At last the sun is shining, The clouds of blue roll by, With flames from the dragon of darkness, the sunlight blinds his eyes.
Bring it back, Bring it back, Bring it back…
Oh now, oh now, oh now Oh…
Bring it Bring it Bring it…
John Bonham and Sandy Denny, you both are missed.

What else could it be on January 1st? [shadow=red,left,300]New Year's Day[/shadow] by U2Yeah... All is quiet on New Year's Day A world in white gets underway I want to be with you Be with you night and day Nothing changes on New Year's Day On New Year's Day I will be with you again I will be with you again Under a blood red sky A crowd has gathered in black and white Arms entwined, the chosen few The newspapers says, says Say it's true it's true... And we can break through Though torn in two We can be one I...I will begin again I...I will begin again Oh... Maybe the time is right Oh...maybe tonight... I will be with you again I will be with you again And so we're told this is the golden age And gold is the reason for the wars we wage Though I want to be with you Be with you night and day Nothing changes On New Year's Day On New Year's Day

This is more of a poem than song lyrics...sort of like Tipi's "LISTEN" on page one - which blew me away. I've had this copy for so long - can't remember where I got it and I can't tell you who the author is either - but it helps sometimes, when things change too fast...enjoy. COMES THE DAWN After a while, you learn the subtle difference between holding a hand and chaining a soul. and you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning and company doesn’t mean security. and you begin to learn that kisses aren’t contracts and presents aren’t promises. and you begin to accept your defeats with your head up and your eyes open –
with the grace of a woman – not the grief of a child. And you learn to build all your roads on today, because tomorrows ground is too uncertain for plans, and futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight. After a while you learn that even sunshine burns, if you get too much. So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers and you learn that you really can endure- that you really are strong- and you really do have worth. And you learn and learn…
with every goodbye – you learn. Author unknown

I pulled out some Storyville and blew the dust off of it.
"What Passes For Love" brought to you in the format of that sweet-ass, low down, Austin Rehearsal Complex groove.
Lest we forget Bridges are burning Lest we forget Tides they are turning
Please forgive us, send some help from above We've got all we need, but it's never enough And I'm sorry to say that I'm amazed at what passes for love
Brother to brother Please take a hand Father and Mother Try and help us understand We learn kind of slow, but these lessons are tough This house will survive if we hammer hard enough But I'm sorry to say that I'm amazed at what passes for love
Too many riches Too many fools Too many heroes with too many rules Fuel the fires of the wars that we wage Fire of anger, without light Fire that shatters the black of night, with seeds of hate and tears of rage
Lest we forget Bridges are burning Lest we forget Tides they are turning Brother to brother, please take a hand Father and Mother, won't you you help us understand So sorry to say that I'm amazed at what passes for love.

OK...so I've had this song in my head for about the last 2 weeks ::)and it had to come out somewhere...why not share. For my money, one of the most extrordinary musical compilations ever - Rickie Lee Jones's "Traffic From Paridise". Running from mercy hidden and coy swim in our sleep down oceans of joy Die in the arms of the natural life Waking our happiness. drowning in light Waking our happiness, drowning in light Love, Love... Running From Mercy by Rickie Lee Jones.

Elvis Costello: Peace Love And Understanding
As I walk through This wicked world Searchin’ for light in the darkness of insanity.
I ask myself Is all hope lost? Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?
And each time I feel like this inside, There’s one thing I wanna know: What’s so funny ’bout peace love & understanding? ohhhh What’s so funny ’bout peace love & understanding?
And as I walked on Through troubled times My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes So where are the strong And who are the trusted? And where is the harmony? Sweet harmony.
’cause each time I feel it slippin’ away, just makes me wanna cry. What’s so funny ’bout peace love & understanding? ohhhh What’s so funny ’bout peace love & understanding?
So where are the strong? And who are the trusted? And where is the harmony? Sweet harmony.
’cause each time I feel it slippin’ away, just makes me wanna cry. What’s so funny ’bout peace love & understanding? ohhhh What’s so funny ’bout peace love & understanding? ohhhh What’s so funny ’bout peace love & understanding?

[shadow=red,left,300]The End of the Innocence[/shadow] by Don Henley
Remember when the days were long And rolled beneath a deep blue sky Didn't have a care in the world With mommy and daddy standing by When "happily ever after" fails And we've been poisoned by these fairy tales The lawyers dwell on small details Since daddy had to fly But I know a place where we can go That's still untouched by man We'll sit and watch the clouds roll by And the tall grass wave in the wind You can lay your head back on the ground And let your hair fall all around me Offer up your best defense But this is the end This is the end of the innocence O' beautiful, for spacious skies But now those skies are threatening They're beating plowshares into swords For this tired old man that we elected king Armchair warriors often fail And we've been poisoned by these fairy tales The lawyers clean up all details Since daddy had to lie But I know a place where we can go And was away this sin We'll sit and watch the clouds roll by And the tall grass wave in the wind Just lay your head back on the ground And let your hair spill all around me Offer up your best defense But this is the end This is the end of the innocence Who knows how long this will last Now we've come so far, so fast But, somewhere back there in the dust That same small town in each of us I need to remember this So baby give me just one kiss And let me take a long last look Before we say good bye Just lay your head back on the ground And let your hair fall all around me Offer up your best defense But this is the end This is the end of the innocence

I must say, one of my favorite Feat lyrics is in Mercenary Territory when Lowell sings: "Some kind of man, he can't do anything wrong If I see him I'll tell him your waiting"
Man, that line has just made too much sense to me over the years.
Other good one (or so) lines in songs: Deep Purple's best use of gibberish that makes sense from Smoke On The Water: "With the Rolling Truck Stones thing just outside"
Deep Purple from Anyone's Daughter: "Well I stood under your bedroom window Throwing up a brick No one came, I threw one more That really did the trick"
There's more, but I'm done for now (and there was much rejoicing...yaaaay).

Bill, your reference to "best use of gibberish" could be the start of a whole new thread. All of us I'm sure have spent years thinking we heard something in one song or another, only to find out the actual lyrics were something else entirely years later. Smoke on the Water is a case in point for me. For years my ears were hearing "but some stupid friend of Flagun burned the place to the ground" {I figured Flagun must be a British name ;D} - actual lyrics are... "but some stupid with a flare gun burned the place to the ground" Also in reference to Deep Purple I've sometimes wondered who the band was actually referring to when they wrote the song Mary Long. It's one of those songs where you know the name is fictional, but you have the sense that they definitely had someone in mind when they wrote it Mary Long is a hypocrite. She does all the things that she tells us not to do... In the seventies it seemed that band was constantly replacing the lead vocalist and the bass player. The most notable vocalists for the band were Ian Gillan, and his successor, David Coverdale. When guitarist Richie Blackmore departed, Iowa native Tommy Bolin filled the bill as the band's guitarist. He's featured on the album Come Taste the Band. Zeppelin drummer John Bonham was none too impressed with Deep Purple and Bolin in particular. Here's an excerpt from Hammer of the Gods... While the sound mixing was underway, Bonzo was on the loose, taking care of business his own way. One night he showed up backstage at a Deep Purple concert at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. Bonzo was drunk and in very high spirits... when he noticed a free microphone during a lull in the music. Staggering forward, Bonzo walked out onto the stage before the Deep Purple roadies could grab him. The group stopped playing, amazed, as Bonzo grabbed the mic and shouted, "My name is John Bonham of Led Zeppelin, and I just wanna tell ya we got a new album comin' out called Presence and that it's fu%$@in great!! " Then he turned to leave, but turned back and gratuitously insulted Deep Purple's guitarist, "And as far as Tommy Bolin is concerned, he can't play for shi%!!" Ahhh, to be a 1970s rock star. Did life get any better than that? As much as I love listening to Bonzo's drums, I have to disagree with his analysis of Deep Purple and Tommy Bolin. I think it was Bonzo who also referred to Jethro Tull as Jethro Dull. The man could play, but he definitely had issues. If you were a young woman and happened to be with the band, it was probably a good idea to keep a close eye on your purse and your shoes if Bonzo was near. Enough said, read the book. -chadgumbo

Good job on the research. ;D
I read somewhere that Mary Long was written about some uptight blueblood named Mary (don't know the last name, but I'll look) and her boyfriend/husband. The whole song is classic british (think of Monty Python with judges and lawyers wearing womens clothes under their cloaks).
Smoke was written about what actually happened to them while recording the album. Some stupid with a flare gun shot it in the middle of a Zappa show at the Montreaux Casino (I think, I might be wrong here) and the whole place burned down. Funky Claude is their engineer or roadie named Claude Nobbs. There's a DVD about the recording of Machine Head and these stories and more are in there.
I was never a Bolin era fan, but they did have some good stuff. As much as I like the funkiness that Glenn Hughes brought to the band, they were not the same band after Gillan and Glover left. Still good but different.
And here's my take on Zepplin...some of their stuff is pure magic. Some of it I just don't like. And usually real Zep fans and I hardly agree on which tunes are best. Not that I'm an authority or anything. The same with The Who and The Doors.
As far as Tull goes...for me, Aqualung through Heavy Horses (or Bursting Out to include the live album) are all incredible. There's some great stuff before but not as consistant. After Barriemore Barlow and John Evan left the band I didn't think they were as good. Still some real tastey stuff, but not as consistant.
Anybody else want me to tell them what they should like? ;D

Sounds like you and I are on the same page I feel much the same way about Zeppelin. My favorite Zep music is when they dabble in the blues, but then I'm huge lover of blues music. And I'm not so crazy about the early heavy metal, such as Dazed and Confused, and Communication Breakdown. But that's not to say that I dislike all of their heavy metal. I really enjoy Black Dog, Whole Lotta Love, and especially Ramble On. (should "enjoy" and "heavy metal" be used in the same sentence? ;D Is that proper English?) Their folksy efforts can be quite good too; Bron Y-aur Stomp comes to mind. Blues favorites would include Since I've Been Loving You, Black Country Woman, and Travelling Riverside Blues. For what it's worth... -chadgumbo Oh, and by the way, another excellent blues tune (by Deep Purple) is a song called Place In Line. It's found on the Who Do We Think We Are? album.

I had the bar that sponsers my hockey team put that (and a ton of Feats) in the juke box. No one else has ever heard it, of course, but I dig it.

---> anyone else think that Fleetwood Mac is nowhere near as good without Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer and/or Danny Kirwin? Just wondering.

Hoyos Con Dios Me Amigoes! weeks worth of absence motivates me ...
Are You Up There? Anders Osborne
So you want to do the right thing But you don't know where to start And you wanna hear your voice ring But you can't find your part
You wanna feel real special But you're afraid to be strange You wish things were different But you don't wanna change
And so you've got yourself a plan But you ain't got no tools Yeah you wanna be the man But you keep hangin' round with fools You wanna lead every dance But you ain't got no groove Yeah you're lookin' to advance But you're stuck right there and you can't move
You keep askin' the man upstairs "Where's all my love this ain't fair Are you up there Tell me are you up there
Sing ya ya ya ya make way Ya ya ya ya make way Ya ya ya ya make your own way Sing tra la la la each and every day Just keep givin' away your good thing and a good thing will come your way
It shook you up and now you're thinking Is he right or is he wrong Maybe there just ain't no meaning Into all lifes silly little songs Aw but when ya go you better move slow That's how you learn you just Stop talking now Stop talking now
Yeah what we give is what we earn he says "of course I'm here I'm everywhere I'm just tired of you askin'"
Sing ya ya ya ya make way Ya ya ya ya make way Ya ya ya ya make your own way Sing tra la la la each and every day Just keep givin' away your good thing and a good thing will come your way
