Peace Love and Understanding-Elvis Costello
As I walk through this wicked world Searching for light in the darkness of insanity I ask myself is all hope lost Is there only pain and hatred and misery
And each time I feel it slippin away It just makes me wanna cry What's so funny 'bout peace love and understanding What's so funny 'bout peace love and understanding
As I walk through these troubled times My spirit get's so downhearted sometimes So where are the strong Who are the trusted Is there only pain and hatred and misery
And each time I feel like this inside There's one thing I wanna know What's so funny 'bout peace love and understanding What's so funny 'bout peace love and understanding

Hobo On A Freight-Train to Heaven - John Starling from the album Long Time Gone - produced by Lowell George
Well the holy men say the world's in decay There's a moral depression at hand Maybe I'm as depressed as all of the rest But I'm doin' the best that I can And they're preaching repentance and passin' down sentence, before my defense can reply I'm struck from their list of those who are blessed With a ticket to heaven on high
I'm a hobo on a freight-train to heaven I ain't got a ticket I'm just stealin' a ride I'm not welcome aboard the train to the lord, But I bet he'll be glad that I tried
I'll double dog dare them to show me just where The proof is that I've gone astray All the wild oats I've sown and the women I've know I've loved in a most heavenly way And I've harboured affection for a wonderous selection Of things of which I'm not ashamed When Gabriel cuts loose I'll just hop that caboose And I'll ride That Glory bound train
I'm a hobo on a freight-train to heaven I ain't got a ticket I'm just stealin' a ride I'm not welcome aboard the train to the lord, But I bet he'll be glad that I tried

Could be a spoonfull of coffee Could be a spoonfull of tea But for a spoonful of my baby's love I'd sacrifice my soul
"Spoonfull" Chester Burnett. AKA Howlin' Wolf
Saw the thread for the Wolf and had to add some of the big man's lyrics.
He got food, drugs, religion and yearnin' for his baby in four short lines, talk about getting your point across in a concise way. Another master, listen and learn.
Peace j ashley
Tipi, The Wolf might be the original master of da' grease.

"Spoonfull" Chester Burnett. AKA Howlin' Wolf Saw the thread for the Wolf and had to add some of the big man's lyrics. Although Wolf did a rip roaring rendition of Spoonfull, the tune was penned by Willie Dixon (also wrote another Wolf classic, Little Red Rooster). Willie had a way with words and blues tunes... Rick

Listen, this song is so chocked full of wisdom I sat and listened to it 5 times tonight (ok and I had time to kill). But It was imho a brilliant choice, not just because of the song in particular, how much wisdom it may or may not posess, but because of all that 5 straight listens brought to the table. I can now really say I have listened to this song. I have heard it. Coincedentally, the song itself IS brilliant, listen up and judge for yourself ...
A man should never Gamble - D.Bromberg
Go ahead and drink your whiskey Run around and stay high all the time It's your body & your soul You save yours and I'll save mine
A Man should never gamble A Man should never gamble A Man should never gamble More than he can stand to lose More than he can stand to lose More than he can lose
Now the straight life's just not your life You can make your own rules Shoot the dice and wear a blindfold I see your not afraid to look the fool
A Man should never gamble A Man should never gamble A Man should never gamble More than he can stand to lose More than he can stand to lose More than he can lose
Well I've heard ya talk of marriage But you know you said you'ld never stop your runnin' round You don't mind gettin' high boy But good god comin' down
A Man should never gamble A Man should never gamble A Man should never gamble More than he can stand to lose More than he can stand to lose More than he can lose
So sing your song and sip your champaigne Dance your dance with diamond Lill You don't have to pay the piper Just have him put it on the bill
A Man should never gamble A Man should never gamble A Man should never gamble More than he can stand to lose More than he can stand to lose More than he can lose
Shoot the dice
wow, I kept playing it back while typing to make sure I was being exactly accurate, DB spends enough time on his words to obligate me, and yet I'm gonna play it again as soon as I'm done here. I am That moved by it. It also occured to me this is the perfect response to the earlier preference that "the 1 good line can be more impactful". Yes indeed, but when you can be just as wise and moving for an entire song, without losing it or degrading it just to finish the song, it seems to me even more impressive. just my $2.50 Peace T

Rick, webmaster in chief,
Thanks for the correction, you're absolutely right, don't know what I was thinking.
Can you imagine walking into a club on the south side of Chicago in the late 40's, early Fifties and hearing the Wolf's band with Willie and Little Walter blowing that bad ass harp.
Peace j ashley

Imagine there's no Heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky Imagine all the people Living for today Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace You may say that I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people Sharing all the world You may say that I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will live as one

-- B. Payne, B. Wray
You can open the window Where the sunset meets the sea Everything's for sale Everything's for free
Sweet mother Mary Sells her fortunes well She's got all the answers Just might save you from hell
Across the street at the bottomless cup You can drink and drink but you can Never get enough You can have yours with sweet and low You might even have the blues to go
One shot Johnny Got a dog on a rope Goin' from table to table With a pocket full of hope
Rodeo riders and scarlet women Lean against your walls The show they're waitin' for Is just three steps down the hall
The of king of jive looks like the queen of please Makes his livin' on his hands and knees You give and you give 'till you give it all Oh, just think if these walls could talk, oh
I've climbed so high And I've surely fell Every story has a hero Down at the Cadillac Hotel
El Dorado Slim Works behind the desk Either day or night He can handle any request
J. C.'s screamin' Bout turnin' water to wine Got all in a big brown bag In the lobby, just past nine, in an old Maytag
The homeless and haunted and street Van Gogh's Lace their souls up tight Hang your coat on a fin, you finally got in Get ready for Cadillac night
Across the street at the bottomless cup It's not about money, you can never get enough A handful of honesty, a fist full of pride It's not how you live, it's how you survive
I've climbed so high And I've surely fell Every story has a hero Down at the Cadillac Hotel
I've climbed so high And I've surely fell Ten thousand feet to zero Down at the Cadillac Hotel

Rollum Easy- L. George Me thinks it goes ... Whoa I am just a vagabond a drifter on the run The eloquent profanity, it rolls right off my tongue And I have dined in palaces, drunk wine with kings & queens But Darlin’ oh darlin’ you’re the best thing I’ve ever seen Won’t you roll me easy, oh slow & easy Take my Independence, with no apprehension no tension You’re a walkin’ talkin’ paradise, sweet paradise I’ve been across this country, from Texas to the ocean And I never met girls who could sing so sweet Like the angels that live in Houston Singing roll me easy, so slow and easy Play that concertina be a temptress And baby I’m defenseless Singing harmony in unison Sweet harmony Gotta hoist the flag and I’ll beat your drum

Rollum Easy ... looks right to me Todd. And, as you probably already know, Three Dog Night's Danny Hutton sang harmony on that tune. He even had a bit of a scratchy throat when he did it, but Lowell convinced him that he would be fine (and he was). All that, and more little fun facts, can be found in Mark Brend's "Rock n' Roll Doctor". But you probably knew that too. Peace - chadgumbo Sometime, when I have some time to sit, think, and type (like today wasn't that day , pretty slow here today) I'm going to post the lyrics to "Framed". Lowell George humor at its best, just as the above "Rollum Easy" is Lowell being introspective at his best as well.

Hey Chadgumbo - sorry for the limited search time ... but Leo's still in surgery (big west wing fan) and I've gotta call Paco de laurentes ... so all I hit was the ritchy valens version, credited to J. Leiber & M. Stoller I was walkin' down the street Mindin' my own affair When two police grabbed me Unaware They says, 'Your name, Henry?' I says, 'Why sho' He says, 'You the boy I been lookin' for' I was framed Framed, I was blamed Fra-a-amed Well, I never knew nothin' But I always get framed Oh, framed (short guitar riff) Spoken: They took him in the line up And let those bright lights shine There was ten poor souls Like me in that line I knew I was a victim Of someone's evil plan When a stool-pigeon walked in And says; (sings) 'That's your man!' I was framed Framed, I was blamed Oh, framed, framed, framed Well, I never knew nothin' But I always get framed (short guitar riff) Spoken: Well, the prosecuting attorney Stared-a prosecutin' me Man, that cat didn't give me the one But the, third degree He says, 'Where were you On the night, July 19, 1953?' 'Man, I was just home, just-a Tweedle-e-dee'. (sings) I was framed Oh, framed, I was blamed Oh, framed, framed, framed Well, I never knew nothin' But I always get framed Oh, framed Oh, framed. Jeez I hope Leo's going to be alright. And I slept like such a baby chicken little last night ... hmmm

To all my liberal friends, this seemed appropriate today:
"Compared to What"
Love the lie and lie the love Hangin' on, with a push and shove Possession is the motivation that is hangin' up the God-damn nation Looks like we always end up in a rut (everybody now!) Tryin' to make it real — compared to what?
Slaughterhouse is killin' hogs Twisted children killin' frogs Poor dumb rednecks rollin' logs Tired old ladies kissin' dogs Hate the human, love that stinking mutt (I can't stand it!) Try to make it real — compared to what?
The President, he's got his war Folks don't know just what it's for Nobody gives us rhyme or reason Have one doubt, they call it treason We're chicken-feathers, all without one gut (God damn it!) Tryin' to make it real — compared to what? (Sock it to me, now)
Church on Sunday, sleep and nod Tryin' to duck the wrath of God Preacher's fillin' us with fright Tryin' to tell us what he thinks is right He really got to be some kind of nut (I can't use it!) Tryin' to make it real — compared to what?
Where's that bee and where's that honey? Where's my God and where's my money Unreal values, crass distortion Unwed mothers need abortion Kind of brings to mind ol' young King Tut (He did it now) Tried to make it real — compared to what?!
Music: Eddie Harris (and how SWEET it is) Lyrics: Eugene McDaniels
