As I’m a native Iowan (now residing in Minnesota), I noticed with some interest that [glow=red,2,300]Richie Hayward[/glow] was inducted into the Iowa Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame. While I’ve known of the IRRHOF’s existence for a few years (it was established in the latter 1990s), I hadn’t given it much thought until I saw Richie’s induction at the Little Feat website.
So I figured I would check out the Iowa Hall’s website and see who else has been honored by these fine folks in the Midwest. As I looked at the various inductees’ names from 1997 to the present, I saw pretty much what I expected to see… a lot of bands and names that go way back… I'm hearing Shaun Murphy's voice in my head I'mmm gonna take you back... I'mmmm gonna take you waaayyyyy back! While I haven’t checked it out, I’m guessing the names of many of these bands probably don’t appear in the Rolling Stone R&R Encyclopedia, and that some of these bands are likely native to the state of Iowa or the Midwest.
In 1999 the committee came to the realization that [glow=red,2,300]Tommy Bolin[/glow], guitarist and vocalist for The James Gang, Deep Purple, and his own band, was born and raised in Sioux City. He entered the Hall in ’99, God rest his soul.
Finally in 2003 the committee realized that the state could lay claim to 2 of Rock n’ Roll’s greatest drummers, as both [glow=red,2,300]Keith Knudsen[/glow] (The Doobie Brothers) and [glow=red,2,300]Richie Hayward[/glow] were born in Iowa. Keith entered the Hall in ’03 and Richie in ’04.
Not only have music artists been inducted, but so too have various radio personalities, radio stations, ballrooms, etc. that are known Iowa mainstays. One interesting name that I came across was [glow=red,2,300]Michael Boddicker[/glow], a writer and producer from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. That makes 2 famous Mike Boddickers from Iowa (and both from Southeast Iowa). The other one was a pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles (pitched in the World Series for them in fact) and later pitched with the Kansas City Royals. Unless, of course, they are one and the same???… nahhh. The pitcher used to work in a grain elevator during the off-season.
For those of you who want to check it out for yourselves, go to www.iowarocknroll.com. Oh, and congratulations Richie!
