;D 2004 has been a super year to rock for me & farmgirl this year and I wanted to share a few thoughts with ya'll!!
For a couple of years we've wanted to catch a chance to go up to the Big Apple and see the Allman Bros for a night during their reknowned run at the Beacon Theatre!! Got tickets online line this year and saw them on Sat. 3/20!! Trips to New York have always been a HOOT for us and the Beacon with the NY fan base was unique to say the least!! The Allman Bros Band are 7 super talented musicians. Cleaned up Gregg sings as good or better than ever. Warren Haynes & Derrick Trucks can do about as much as they or anybody else would ever want to do on guitar. They played for 2 sets over 2-1/2 hours....but both of us walked away a little bit disappointed. What was missing was solid band cohesiveness!! All that talent that they have has been spread out thin to too many other pots on the fire. I'm saying this because of the way they performed and what they delivered!! Almost every song they played was separated by up to more 5 minutes of silence and darkened stage and you could see them talking to eachother.....apparently trying to figure out whtat they were going to do next. And each song started out with a few bars of a popular song from their expansive base (except any that may have been written by Dickey Betts) and then would drift off with either Derrick or Warren soloing!! Why do I think their performance was like this?? Well each band member is also deeply involved with other interests!! Warren has Gov't Mule and touring with the Dead, Derrick plays more gigs with Derrick Trucks Band than he does with ABB, Gregg has Gregg & Friends, Oteil Burbridge with Orteil & the Peacemakers.....etc, etc.!!
Now comes last night when farmgirl & me got to see LF at the Jefferson Center, close to our farm in Roanoke, VA!!! We've both been big Waitin' for Columbus fans but neither of us have ever seen them live......we will never let any future opportunity slip away again!!! To get ready for this we got Kicking it at the Barnand the DVD High Wire Act. Both of these showed us that the band has far from lost it since Waitin' for Columbus..... and the concert last night more than confirmed it!!! Honestly, they played several songs that I was not familiar with....but everyone of them was delivered sooooo tight!!!! They played for 2 hours and I wanted to hear so much more.....spoiled rotten!!!! I got so much more for $25 than I got for $75 with ABB!!!
And now comes their scheduled gig with ABB at Nissan Pavillion....and I know that they will be playing 1st and be limited to a shortened performance......some things are tough to understand!!!
Unfortunately, we were psyched about the idea of going to Jamaica for the party down there....but looks like we'll have to wait til the next time when lodging is available where clothing is NOT optional!!
