As a former active trader and current taper, I have assembled lots of shows over the years. I just recently upgraded my car stereo to a deck that plays MP3's (as well as an AUX in so I can listen to the DAT on the way home from the show!). First of all, I have 1 CD with almost every studio CD that Feats have put out! How sweet is that? Now my problem. If I create an MP3 from Waiting For Columbus, let's say, I get a gap between songs. Very irritating. Anyone know if that can be eliminated? Any programs that don't do that? I plan on getting an iPod to play on this deck, but my plan of converting lots of shows to a few discs and the iPod came to a halt with this realization. Any help from the tech type people would be great. Thanks Bill L

My understanding is that you are looking at a software limitation. you want to look for a "Complete At Once" or "Disk At Once" option to eliminate those annoying gaps.

It's definately not a "Disc-at-once/track-at-once" issue. From my understanding of MP3's, most (all?) of the conversion software adds a couple of milliseconds before and after each track. The end result is a pause between the tracks. What I'd love is a MP3 converter similar to the GoldenHawk Tech. Burner software. With that program, I take an 80 min .wav file and the program puts in the track points without any gaps between songs or additional editing. My brother has this same problem with his iPod and from my limited searches on the internet this seems to be a universal problem. If you can think of anything else, let me know. Thanks for the reply, threebeards. Bill L

Bill, I've never done much with MP3s other than to rip the occasional disc down to put on my JB3. Most of them are commercial studio efforts and thus have the normal track breaks. I use Music Match Jukebox 5someting and transfert the files via USB.
I have, however, also ripped live shows that are effectively seamless that have track markers and don't have any sense that what you describe has happened to me as a "normal" result of converting to MP3.
Now, when you say that you want to "create an MP3 from WFC" are you talking about ripping the CD? Or are you doing a vinyl2CD/wav conversion? There may be some interpretation by the ripping software that your are using that there are track markers even though that entire program plays as DAO. If that's the case, I'd try to get the WFC into a OTW (one track wonder ;D) format and rip that to see if this theory holds water.

I just came across a tool called BURRRN that claims to do "gapless" mp3. You can find it at apehaus.com/burrrn/. Good luck. TB

Thanks threebeards, but I get a Forbidden Access (or something) screen. Just to update you (if anyone really cares) I purchased a Creative Nomad 30 Gig unit that doesn't have the same problem as the head unit. I'm guessing that the CD player in the head unit needs to read the track data and tree information before it can/will proceed to the next track which creates the lag time I talked about. And since I'm in a Jeep Wrangler, being able to carry around 1 unit with over 100 CDs and 2200 songs (so far...and I still have over 20 gigs left) is alot easier than worrying about if someone will steal any/all of the CDs from me. Now I can keep me sons CD in the unit (saving where we left off) and I can still listen to almost all of my CD collection (over 1000 CDs) at the touch of a button. I really couldn't be more pleased. Thanks again threebeards!
