Hi, I have tix to the upcoming Ann Arbor Feat show and since they allow taping of shows I really would like to try this myself. I've never taped a live show before and I'm really thrilled to be seeing them live!! I probably could just borrow the equipment if I knew exactly what I needed. Just a DAT recorder? Anyone have any helpful hints or recommendations? Of course if it works out I'm willing to share

Well... first you must know that it's an addicting hobby, and it's not cheap if you choose to get into it more than a little bit. If all you ever want to do is tape a soundboard feed at Little Feat shows, you could get by for less than $300-$500 if you bought a used DAT deck and got some required cables. If you choose to go cheaper, a Mini Disc recorder will only run you $200 or so new... much less used. You could get a hard drive recorder that records to MP3 or WAV for $200-$400 new. Many folks record directly into a laptop. I'd advise registering at www.taperssection.com/index.php and read, read, read. Tons of taping info and it will save you a lot of trial and error. If you think you'd like to record via microphones, be prepared to learn about the various pickup patterns, mic pre amps, Analog to Digital converters... and have a fat check book! All points covered and available at TS.com Hope this helps
