This may be a no-brainer for some of you but how do you grade the quality of the shows that are available? Is it strictly by sound? Are there variations like...the vocals are way in the background but the instruments are spot on? Or is it strictly a subjective thing?

It is all pretty much subjective, Tim. This is something I found in a few idle minutes surfing... Sound Quality: A+ = Superb, comparable to officially released CD Quality (only the absolutely perfect SBD or master fm) A = Great (most fm and SBD, or perfect audience tapes) A- = Real Good (very minor flaws, excellent audience tapes) B+ = Good (listenable, some flaws, very good audience tapes) B = Just OK (noticeable hiss and/or crowd noise, muffled) Below B = I don't collect anything that is not listenable I've seen number systems too which pretty much follow the same guidelines: 10= perfect SBD.... 4=You pay me to give it to you ;D I tend to rate most Aud recordings A- or below simply due to the nature of the crowd noise factor. There may also be more "structural" issues such as gaps due to tape or disc flips, tape hiss, or static from poor cables etc. Some early ‘70s SBD sources captured on cassette or reel to reel tape could also be rated low due to tape hiss issues, so some SBD shows could be rather low ratings wise. Most soundboards or FM captures will be pretty free of noise but could suffer from a poor mix, board induced static or lost tracs due to the instrument not being "run through" the board. Sometimes in small venues the bass or the drums may not be running to the board and then you have a really empty sounding take. I wouldn't get too hung up about rating shows on "performance" quality either... And for everyone who demands a SBD show there are those who love a lively Aud capture. It makes sense to list any technical faults... gaps, hiss, drops... but to even try to grade a performance would seem hard for me. Share the music and let the music do the talkin', but... ... I could be wrong

I am all about the music but was curious about some of the comments I've seen around. I think live is where it is definately at. There is so much mood to be found from show to show (or set to set) and the studio catches just "one" of those moods.
