Buy Nothing Day this Friday For 24 hours, millions of people around the world do not participate — in the doomsday economy, the marketing mind-games, and the frantic consumer-binge that’s become our culture. We pause. We make a small choice not to shop. We shrink our footprint and gain some calm. Together we say: enough is enough. And we help build this movement to rethink our unsustainable course. adbusters.org/metas/eco/bnd/

I don't know if Kohl's Department Store is a nationwide store chain or if it is a regional chain of stores here in the upper midwest. They do have excellent selection, quality, and great prices on clothing. But, for the last few days they've been adverstising that on Friday (today) they would be opening their doors at 5:00 AM! I thought to myself that the only way I'd be shopping at 5AM would be if I was dreaming about it. And, as I guessed, I wasn't at their store or anyone else's at 5 - not physically and not in my dreams. I'm hoping that not very many people showed up at that hour. And it's not because I have anything against Kohl's. It's because I'm pretty sure the employees at Kohl's would probably rather not be there themselves, and I'm also pretty sure that they had little or no say in the matter. 8:00, 9:00, or 10:00 this morning would have been just fine for opening their doors. Like the previous post says... enough is enough.

Chad,
A few years ago a Super K-Mart opened here. On opening day they had "special deals" for the first few shoppers. They were supposed to open at 6 AM but had to open early because those in front of the line (after camping out all night) were in danger of being pushed through the front doors. What has become of us when we will injure our fellow man to save a few cents on some cheap junk?
I worked in retail (Penney's) one Christmas in my youth and haven't been in a store the day after Thanksgiving since; madness.
Peace j

In the late '70s I was an asst mgr of a "Toy's R Us" in Tampa, Fla for a few years. From mid November to mid January it was the most bizarre scene I had ever witnessed. I would literally break up fights between mothers over the last of an item (toy) that had been on sale. People can get pretty weird over shopping, especially around Christmas. Frightening even! To this day, I avoid shopping and retail if at all possible. Internet shopping loves me, and I don't have to put up with some kid talking on their cell phone while they're "helping" me in the store.
