Hello All...Huge Deadhead here. Goin' to see Bobby and the 'dog @ the Beacon. I always like to familiarize myself to the opening band. Never got into Little Feat. No reason. Never hated them. Always liked what I heard. Anyway, can you guys point me in the right direction as to what CD's to get? Should I just go for the Ripe/Raw tomatoes or the Hotcakes & Outtakes or are there some albums I must have and are guaranteed to make me feel good. Any feedback would be cool. Hope to see you guys @ the Beacon. Incidentally, I was @ Roseland for the tsunami benefit that moe. put on @ Sam Bush came out solo (just him and his mandolin) and played an absolute kickass "Sailin' Shoes". Phenomenal song played by a phenomenal musician. Thanks again and Peace.

<snip, snip> Anyway, can you guys point me in the right direction as to what CD's to get? <snip, snip> Depends on if you're looking to hear what's happening now, or what's already happened. Hot Cakes is a great retrospecitve from it's time and so is Ripe and Raw. Ripe and Raw will have the newer material too. For kick ass now jams, I recommend Down Upon the Suwannee. It's the latest live recording from Hot Tomato Records and is a smoking show. If you have an acoustical bend, then Live at the Rams Head is for you. Great venue and vibes and the discs show it. IMHO, the re-release of Waiting for Columbus is a must have for anyone's collection. If you trade shows, there's a ton of great Feat stuff available. The shows from the end of last tour are great (BB King's, Keswick, Birchmere) I'm sure some other folks will chime in. Have a great time at the Beacon show. Don't be a stranger, we can fill your ears up with some great tunes... Rick

Thanks Rick, for taking the time out and replying. It's no easy task I'm sure. We're talking about a large body of work here. If somebody asked me where to start as far as the Dead was concerned, whoa, where do I begin? Got six weeks to bone up. Looking forward to seeing all the Feat fans @ the Beacon. I love that place. Great accoustics. Great vibe. I have the feeling it's gonna be one of those really positve shows where everybody is dancin' and smilin'. Can't wait.

jojo,
Thought you ought to have at least one more opinion even though Rick thought's were all valid.
If I had to pick one studio albumn all time from the Feat I would have to pick "The Last Record Albumn" this record is in my all time top 5 and is strong from beginning to end. It will also give you a great overview of the bands talents and varied styles of music. This albumn is a can't miss for anyone.
As far a live compilations go, even though "Waiting For Columbus" is great (especially the hottest version of the greatest road song ever "Spanish Moon") I have a slight preference for "Hoy-Hoy" both for including one of my favorite Feat tunes ever "Gringo" and for showcasing their work with other artist, "All that you Dream" with Linda Rondstat and I think the greatest recording of this tune anywhere, check out the intro. I love "Hotcakes and Out Takes" but with all out takes and alternate version albumns might not be the place to start, however; my favorite version of "Red Streamliner" is included here and for me was worth the price of the albumn, did you ever have a song that you kind of liked but then you heard of version that just took off for you? That was me with this tune and this version.
You'll find great folks here and the Feat seem real good about tape trading as long as it is not used commercially(like the Dead); there is a thread on the forum. Start listening to the Feat enough and you might change your favorite band, even though lots of us here like the Dead too.
Welcome
Peace j

Welcome indeed, JJB&W Sam Bush is making Sailin’ Shoes his own I think. I love the way he plays that nugget of a song. Glad you got that little taste. You have the joy of being in your own camp re: the Feat... If you spend much time reading threads here or elsewhere where Lowell George discussions pop up, you'll find that there are 2 to 2.5 camps of Feat Fans: Pre 6-29-79 (or even pre ’77) or post... (Some really miss Craig Fuller in the mix and that’s not a shot.) At any rate, what I've done for my young friends who want to know what to pick up, is I try to bring them up chronologically by getting them to hear some Lowell era then Craig era then anything currently in play. It’s all good. You can even pick up Bill Payne's new solo offering, Cielo Norte. Fine work. I like to think of it as the Little Feat, “Silmarillion”… I echo jashley's high marks for Last Record Album and Hoy Hoy which is often over looked for the reasons he stated, but Dixie Chicken is probably the most popular work that people will share and songs from here consistently find themselves on current setlists... (You will likely not recognize Dixie Chicken heard live today if this CD is the only version you know… but that’s not a bad thing!) As you move to '77 Time Loves a Hero and or Waiting For Columbus double CD are very good sample for this time frame. WFC is often listed as one of rock's top 10 live albums. No doubt about it. Following the eight year layoff, the band reformed with Craig Fuller and Fred Tackett. I'd recommend either/or Let It Roll, '88 and/or Representing the Mambo, '89. Billy shines on 'Mambo' IMO. Craig Fuller opted out of the band to avoid the long tours that this band was making and continues to make. The current band line up now spans 10 years or a bit more and the first CD that prominently features Shaun Murphy is Ain't Had Enough Fun. '95. Solid. After ’95 there are lots to choose from: Live From Neon Park ’96, Under The Radar ’98, Chinese Work Songs ‘00, Live At Rams Head ’02, Down Upon The Suwannee River ’03 (nominated for a Jammy award in ’03 for best live concert recording… the winner went to Gov’t Mule’s Deepest End show…) and the most current Kickin’ It At The Barn... along with the Ripe/Raw offerings and some others. Wow, I just edited out a ton of crap… you’re lucky Hope this helps, don’t be a stranger and let us know how the show went down. DPK

I was going to chime in and tell you that to my way of thinking there are 3 distinct eras of Little Feat's history. But DPK pretty much laid it all out for you, and probably better than I would have. For my money, Waiting for Columbus is the finest live album ever recorded. I can't think of a finer intro to LF's music. However, if you're wanting to acquaint yourself with the live experience of LF today... Live at Neon Park is a very good album as well. Also, LF has a recently released DVD "Live Highwire Act in Saint Louis", and I'm fond of that too. Studio albums... Jashley hits a bullseye with his recommendation of "Last Record Album". DPK right on the money with his Craig Fuller era recommendations, and during the Shaun Murphy era my favorites include "Aint Had Enough Fun" and "Kickin' It at the Barn" (although Shaun's talents are more represented on Aint Had Enough Fun). But whatever album you pick up I'm pretty sure you're going to enjoy it. Knock yourself out and welcome aboard. -chadgumbo

"Waitin' For Columbus" is the one that did it for me. "Spanish Moon" in particular. If you want a real taste of Little Feat I think the best way to go is see them live. Next to that I'd recomend the DVD "Highwire Act". I've had more than a few people watch that with me and then go out and purchase it for themselves.

DeBerry
I gotta give you an amen on "Spanish Moon" on Waiting for Columbus. The ulitimate "road" song and it just sounds right live. Not saying the studio version is bad but this is the version I love.

First off I want to thank everybody who replied. You guys gave me exactly the info I was looking. Again, this was no small task considering the large body of work. I went w/ Hotcakes & Outtakes cuz I'm a sucker for compilations. Especially when it's as well done as this one. Kudos to everyone that put the package together. I have to say that "Waiting For Columbus" is what I'm really listening to. Great stuff. Only the good CD's go from my apt. to the my Jeep and back into my apt. @ the end of the day.
Got my face melted by ABB @ the Beacon Mon. night. "Jessica", "Layla". "Little Martha"!!!!! Lordy, Lordy.
Lookin' forward to seeing you guys @ the Beacon. Thanks again.
